A new light rail system: Limmattalbahn
The Limmattalbahn connects the communities between Zurich-Altstetten and Killwangen-Spreitenbach. The 13.5-kilometre double-track railroad line with 27 stops was inaugurated in December 2022. Basler & Hofmann played a key role in the planning and construction of the high-performance light rail system.
Greencity Zurich: Drainage according to the sponge city principle
On the former Sihl Manegg industrial site, a quarter with apartments, a hotel and workplaces has been created on an area of around 65,000 square meters. The forward-looking development concept includes sustainable rainwater management, which is based entirely on the sponge city principle. The water is stored on site, infiltrated or evaporated and thus kept in a local cycle.
Gütsch wind farm: repowering and expansion
Renewable electricity has been produced from wind power on the Gütsch above Andermatt since 2004. As the high alpine wind farm has proved its worth and has met with great acceptance, some of the existing turbines are being replaced by new, more powerful ones. Three new turbines will also be installed. We supported Elektrizitätswerk Ursern with the repowering and expansion.
Expansion of Bern railway station
The main station in Bern is reaching the limits of its capacity. The existing RBS station is being replaced by a new, efficient underground station with four tracks and a new feeder line. The project is being realized under challenging inner-city conditions, in parallel with other concept designs and without interrupting station operations.
Balm Bridge Meiringen
As part of the Hasliaare flood protection project, the existing girder bridge from 1964 is being replaced by a modern three-span frame bridge. The new bridge is being planned and constructed entirely using BIM.
New ewz Herdern depot: Steel façade greening
Elektrizitätswerk Zürich (ewz) is renovating and expanding its site in Zurich West in two stages. In the first stage, a new construction was built for the central warehouse. On the east façade of the new building, ewz has installed vertical greenery. We developed the filigree steel structure together with the architects. The Construction received a recognition award at the Prix Acier in 2023.
Police and Justice Center Canton Zurich PJZ: Structural engineering
The new police and justice center of the canton of Zurich was built on the site of the former freight station in Zurich-Aussersihl-Hard. The impressive building unites police and prosecution authorities as well as a justice prison in a single location. We were involved in a wide range of disciplines in this extraordinary building, including structural engineering.
Bad Zurzach eastern bypass
Around 10,000 cars drove through the middle of the old town of Bad Zurzach every day. The new eastern bypass has relieved the pressure on the town's historic center. The central component is a new, approximately 500-meter-long cut-and-cover tunnel. Basler & Hofmann was responsible for the overall management from the preliminary project to commissioning.
Pedestrian underpass Zurich-Altstetten
Altstetten railway station has developed into an important hub for public transport in Zurich. In order to accommodate the increasing volume of passengers, the central pedestrian underpass was widened from 4 to 12.5 meters during ongoing railway operations and the entire station was extended to provide disabled access. Basler & Hofmann was in charge of the general planning consortium.
Tiefenbrunnen heating network, Zurich
The Tiefenbrunnen heating network uses lake water from Lake Zurich to supply energy to around 5,300 residents in the Tiefenbrunnen district. Basler & Hofmann was responsible for the project planning of the plants from the preliminary project through to commissioning.
Masterplan HB / Central City of Zurich: Test planning
As part of the test planning for the area around Zurich's main railway station and Central, we developed an innovative vision for the future of the city's "hypercenter" as part of an interdisciplinary team: A reorganized transport infrastructure and generous green spaces prioritize pedestrian traffic and sustainably enhance the area.
Flood protection and revitalization of the Kleine Emme
The expansion of the Kleine Emme from the mouth of the Fontanne to the confluence with the Reuss aims to better protect settlements and infrastructure from flooding. At the same time, innovative measures such as the use of deadwood and riverbank riprap are creating new habitats for flora and fauna along the river.
Küsnacht municipality: BIM introduction and projects
The municipality of Küsnacht was one of the pioneers in the use of BIM in civil engineering. Basler & Hofmann supported the introduction of BIM in the innovative municipality and implemented the first pilot projects. Among other things, BIM should help to gradually build up a database of the municipal Infrastructure and the materials used in it in order to be able to use resources more efficiently in the future.
Fire engineering for the Kongresshaus and Tonhalle Zurich
The building complex consisting of the Kongresshaus and Tonhalle Zurich, which is known beyond the country's borders, was in urgent need of renovation. As part of the renewal, it was necessary to comply with today's fire safety regulations. A balancing act between fire engineering, monument protection and usage interests.
Embraport logistics site: redevelopment and expansion of bonded warehouse
Zürcher Freilager AG is renovating the "Embraport" freight center. The site, which is located between Zurich and Winterthur and covers an area of around 160,000 square meters, is set to become a showcase project for sustainability in logistics. Basler & Hofmann was responsible for the overall management and HVACSE planning for Building B, the future bonded warehouse. An essential element of the future energy supply is a huge ice storage tank.
New cross-connection for the Schoren tunnel: Submission directly from the model
As part of the renovation of the A1 urban highway near St. Gallen, a new cross-connection is being built in the Schoren tunnel. The Federal Roads Office FEDRO is using this sub-project as a pilot for Building Information Modeling BIM and, with the support of Basler & Hofmann, has realized a Swiss-wide premiere: the tendering of a public infrastructure project directly from the model.
Northern approach to the Gotthard Base Tunnel
The five-kilometre northern access route through the Reuss Valley in Uri connects the Gotthard Base Tunnel with the existing railroad network. The challenging high-speed route was planned and built in such a way that the habitat in the valley is affected as little as possible.
