Technikumstrasse Winterthur: redesign and redevelopment

Technikumstrasse, one of Winterthur's main traffic arteries, is being fundamentally renovated and redesigned. The project includes the redevelopment of the Roads and service pipes, the optimization of traffic flow and measures to improve the quality of life and the urban climate.

With 21,000 vehicles a day, several superordinate cycle routes and significant pedestrian flows, Technikumstrasse is a central traffic axis in Winterthur. The cantonal main road forms the transition between the railway station, the old town and the new Technikumstrasse campus of the ZHAW. The existing infrastructure no longer meets the requirements: the city buses are stuck in traffic, there are no continuous cycle lanes and the service pipes are in need of renovation. The new operational and design concepts (BGK) will bring improvements for all road users. Buses determine the green times, which also benefits motorists. Cyclists will have a continuous cycle lane on the track. New crossings will be created for pedestrians and paths will be widened. Holderplatz will be redesigned as a "gateway to the old town" to enhance the cityscape. Tree-lined avenues, fountains and the unsealing of surfaces will help to improve the urban climate. The project was accompanied by an intensive political participation process and adapted to new framework conditions such as the introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit and the expansion of the Technikum campus.

The project also has a lot to offer underground. For example, the over 100-year-old and 400-metre-long combined sewer will be replaced using trenchless pipe jacking while traffic continues to flow. The trenchless method offers numerous other advantages - for example, noise and dust emissions are significantly reduced and far less material is required.
