Sponge city

Modern drainage for areas, neighborhoods, communities and cities follows the sponge city principle. The idea is to close the natural water cycle as locally as possible by storing, using, evaporating and infiltrating rainwater on site instead of channeling it into the sewage system or a body of water via the shortest route, as has been the case up to now. This can mitigate the effects of climate change in populated areas and increase the quality of life for the population.

The sponge city principle as a guiding star for the drainage concept

With sponge city elements - also known as blue-green infrastructure - rainwater is infiltrated on site and made available for plants or stored for use. The cooling effect of evaporation creates a more pleasant microclimate - especially during hot spells. In addition, significantly less water needs to be drained away, which reduces both the risk of flooding and the risk of damage from surface runoff.

In close cooperation with architectural and landscape architecture firms, we develop drainage concepts based on the sponge city principle for cities and municipalities as well as for general planners and real estate developers. In doing so, we integrate the requirements of numerous stakeholders, as the aim is to harmonize drainage, traffic use, spatial design and operational maintenance. Thanks to our broad interdisciplinary approach, we can offer our clients expertise on all these topics from a single source.
