Drainage of the Zollstrasse Zurich site according to the sponge city principle

A new development was built on former railroad tracks on Zollstrasse in Zurich. As the public sewer network in this area is heavily utilized, the drainage system was designed according to the principles of the sponge city.

The roof surfaces are greened and the rainwater runoff is fed into the groundwater after being retained in underground infiltration systems. The limited space was a particular challenge. A suburban railroad tunnel runs underneath the district. Nevertheless, it was also possible to infiltrate the meteoric water that accumulates on the surrounding areas. The sidewalks and road surfaces drain into the sewer system via a retention system.
