Wankdorfcity 3: Planning according to the sponge city principle

An urban residential and working quarter with around 500 apartments and 3,000 jobs is being built north of Bern-Wankdorf railway station. The drainage of the urban lighthouse project was planned according to the sponge city principle. This closes the natural water cycle locally, which both increases the quality of life in the district and minimizes the amount of wastewater to be discharged.

In "Wankdorfcity 3", rainwater is stored, used and evaporated on several levels on site. Intensively greened roof areas, an urban terrace at a height of 30 meters on the 8th floor and green areas at city level ensure that hardly any rainwater is discharged into the sewer system.

Basler & Hofmann supported the landscape architect with the drainage planning and consistently implemented the sponge city principle. Despite the unfavorable infiltration properties on site, hardly any rainwater is discharged into the sewage system. This was achieved, among other things, by large green substrate storage tanks on several levels, which significantly slow down the drainage. The sponge city experts provided all the evidence for the drainage concept and advised the general planning team on the project planning and construction of the sponge city elements. These contribute to a pleasant microclimate through the evaporation of rainwater via plants, which will provide significant relief, particularly during hot spells.
