Zurich main station: protection concept, alarm and emergency planning
A large part of Zurich main station is located underground: rail infrastructure, tracks, shopping arcades, pedestrian underpasses, service stations and bicycle stations. The entire complex is at risk from flooding by the River Sihl. Basler & Hofmann was commissioned by SBB, Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU) and the Civil Engineering Department of the City of Zurich to determine the risk to the main railway station and to design coordinated protection systems against potential flooding. Based on the projected area protection concepts, Basler & Hofmann planned three coordinated alarm and emergency plans. They define the processes for raising the alarm, setting up the mobile protective measures and evacuating the entire main station and Selnau railway station complex.
