Test planning utilization concept for Biel station square

The city of Biel is expanding its railway station. The expansion and closure of a section of national highway will significantly change the urban space. In an interdisciplinary test planning process, we have shown how the space can be restructured and traffic organized.

The expansion of the railroad station in Biel with a new pedestrian underpass and the suspended western branch of the A5 motorway represent a new starting point for the space between Lake Biel and the city center. In our test planning contribution in an interdisciplinary team with urban planning, social space and landscape architecture, we showed the city of Biel how the space can be structured and used, how the means of transport can be prioritized on the various road sections and where there is potential for densification. To create space for the diverse functions of the railway station, motorized private transport will disappear from the area around the station and the bus stops will be reorganized. This will create decentralized transfer points that offer attractive connections and significantly improve the distribution of people around the station. The pedestrian zone in the city center will be extended via Bahnhofstrasse to the railway station, and Bahnhofplatz will become an essentially open space.
