Revitalization of Walenbrunnen, Canton Uri

The access route to the Gotthard Base Tunnel had a major impact on nature and the environment in the Reuss Valley in Uri. As one of the ecological compensation measures, the Walenbrunnen, a stream in the Rynächt valley, was renaturalized. The monotonous melioration channel was transformed into an ecologically valuable watercourse.

The renaturation of the Walenbrunnen over a length of 2.7 kilometers served to compensate for various project interventions of the AlpTransit Gotthard North project in the habitats of the Rynächt valley plain. Where the new line crossed the existing Walenbrunnen, the course of the stream was moved around 100 meters to the south. The stream parcel was widened from 10 to 16 meters. In the upper reaches, the Walenbrunnen was routed parallel to the relocated Gotthardstrasse. Over a length of 700 meters, the freed-up area of the dismantled main line was used for renaturation measures. The renaturation of the entire course of the stream was carried out in three separate stages.
