Northern approach to the Gotthard Base Tunnel: Stägwald retaining walls
The northern approach to the Gotthard Base Tunnel leads directly along a steep slope to the portal. The Stägwald retaining walls secure the slope section in front of the north portal and protect the new overpass track of the old Gotthard line from falling rocks. With a length of 335 meters and a height of up to 13 meters, the monolithic concrete angle retaining wall represents a structural challenge.
The impressive retaining walls were part of the "AlpTransit Gotthard" project and formed an independent construction lot. The geometry of the wall is particularly challenging due to its 5:1 ratio and its location in a curve. It is also located directly on the cut-and-cover tunnel of the north portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
The slope cut was secured with a piled curtain wall that was partially anchored back. The piles have a load-bearing effect in the final state and serve to transfer the forces from a rockfall into the ground. In the remaining areas, the retaining walls have a flat foundation.
