ewz Binz substation: earthquake upgrade
We were able to examine the Binz substation, a central structure for the power supply of Zurich-Wiedikon, Albisrieden and Enge dating from 1953, in detail for its seismic-resistant properties and plan measures to strengthen this vital structure.
As a class BWK III structure, the substation must remain fully functional even after an earthquake. On behalf of Elektrizitätswerke Zürich ewz, we carried out a detailed review of the seismic design of the structure and the components of the outdoor plant. Based on these investigations, we developed measures to increase the earthquake-resistant design. These included steel trusses to reinforce the horizontal bracing and special supports for components at risk of tilting, such as masonry walls.
Our services
- Inspection to identify the seismic weak points of the existing support structure and the attachment of electrotechnical components
- Detailed review of the earthquake-resistant properties of the various structures using detailed 3D building models and the response spectrum method
- Checking the earthquake-resistant design of the substation's electrical components
- Development, project planning and supervision of the construction of the retrofitting measures
