Bern railway station: expansion of public facilities

Switzerland's second-largest railway station is being made fit for the future with an extensive extension. The public facilities are being expanded and a completely new underground station for the Bern-Solothurn regional transport service is being built while ongoing operations continue and in the tightest of spaces. Basler & Hofmann has been commissioned as general planner for both major projects.

With around 250,000 travelers per day, Bern railway station is reaching its limits. In the center of the station, the new "Mitte" pedestrian underpass, which is up to 80 meters wide, will create more space for the increasing pedestrian traffic flow. It will provide two new entrances to the station from the city, shorten the distances to the platforms and provide access to the new RBS underground station. New service areas will increase the station's attractiveness. The platform concourse will be opened up to allow daylight in and all platforms will be made disabled accessible.

This major project in the heart of the federal capital is hard to beat in terms of challenges: The construction of the new underground public facilities is taking place during ongoing railway operations and parallel to the new RBS underground station, the second major underground construction site beneath Bern station.
