A1 St. Gallen West - St. Gallen East: repair of 4 tunnels

The St. Gallen city highway was opened in 1987 and is the most important traffic axis in the city and the region. FEDRO is now renovating the 10-kilometer section between Winkeln and Neudorf. The high volume of traffic and the regularly harsh winters with intensive de-icing operations have taken their toll on the section. The project includes the repair of four tunnels and the new construction of two cross-connections.

In addition to the structural repairs, the main aim is to increase tunnel safety. In the Schoren tunnel, the distances between the escape doors are too large, so two new cross-connections are being built using the mining method.

In all tunnels, the inner linings have high chloride levels. They will be reprofiled and coated in the reinforced cut-and-cover areas. In the Stephanshorn tunnel, the vault will be reinforced. The embankments, drainage and extinguishing water supply will be rebuilt, adapted and expanded to meet current requirements. The tunnel control centers will be expanded and rebuilt in accordance with current standards.
