Contract awarded for the preliminary project for the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel II

The Zimmerberg Base Tunnel I from Zurich to Thalwil was also planned by Basler & Hofmann. It is now being continued with the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel II, which was already prepared during the construction of the first tunnel with the Nidelbad connecting structure shown here.

The Zimmerberg Base Tunnel II is intended to significantly increase capacity on the railroad line between Zurich and Zug by 2037 and reduce travel times. The second tunnel will connect to the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel I in Kilchberg via an existing connecting structure (see picture). After 10.8 kilometers, the south portal will be located in the Litti area near Baar. Together, the two tunnels will be around 20 kilometers long, making it the fourth longest Rail Tunnels in Switzerland.

Basler & Hofmann was the lead engineering company in a planning consortium that developed the concept study for the new tunnel. Basler & Hofmann has now also recently been awarded the contract for the preliminary project as part of the same, strengthened planning consortium. The Basler & Hofmann project team is delighted to be able to make a further contribution to easing the bottleneck between Zurich and Zug. The route is now an "old acquaintance" for the Basler & Hofmann experts: In addition to the concept study for the tunnel now commissioned for project planning, Basler & Hofmann was already in charge of the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel I between Zurich and Thalwil, which went into operation in 2003. Basler & Hofmann will contribute its experience with long mechanized tunnel drives in rock and complex structures to the project.
