Contract awarded to Basler & Hofmann: a fourth track for Stadelhofen station and a second Riesbach tunnel
Stadelhofen station is currently a major bottleneck on the main S-Bahn line in Zurich. Basler & Hofmann has now been awarded the contract to plan the expansion of the station and the adjoining Riesbach tunnel. The project is part of SBB's 2035 expansion plan.
Stadelhofen station currently has just over 80,000 passengers per day. According to forecasts, this figure is expected to rise to around 130,000 by 2050. To cope with the increased volume, Stadelhofen station is to be expanded from three to four tracks and the adjacent Riesbach tunnel in the direction of Tiefenbrunnen from one to two tracks. Two new tunnels will have to be built for the expansion.
Basler & Hofmann has the overall planning mandate as the lead partner of the commissioned planning consortium BEE+ and is handling the contract from concept design to commissioning, including site supervision. The project team is contributing its expertise in tunnelling, foundation engineering, special civil engineering, surveying, track engineering, urban civil engineering and construction phase planning to the interdisciplinary contract. According to the current project status, construction is scheduled to start in 2026. Commissioning is scheduled for 2036.
Basler & Hofmann's extensive experience with tunnel construction projects in intensively built-up areas with settlement-sensitive structures and with the construction of tunnels in groundwater-bearing granular soil was decisive for the award of the contract. Among other things, Basler & Hofmann was involved in the project planning and construction of the cross-city link in Zurich and is currently playing a key role in the expansion of Bern SBB railway stations and the construction of the new station for the Bern-Solothurn regional transport network (RBS).
