Renewal of the Waldenburg Railway

The Waldenburg Railway connects the cantonal capital of Liestal with the municipality of Waldenburg over a distance of 13 kilometers. The project included the complete renewal of the infrastructure facilities. The aim was to enable a quarter-hourly service with high timetable stability and to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

As part of the project, the track system was converted to meter gauge and the entire infrastructure was renewed, from the substructure to the stops, safety systems, overhead lines and traction power supply. Basler & Hofmann took the lead in the engineering consortium and planned lot 4 between Hölstein and Hirschlang across all planning phases. In addition to the complete renewal of the tracks, a double-track crossing, two new stops, various supporting structures and extensive utility and road construction work had to be planned and implemented on the 2.1-kilometre section. The IG's mandate also included the track alignment and the environmental impact report.
