Plasmalysis study: Hydrogen from industrial wastewater

Sovag Sonderabfallverwertungs AG is one of Switzerland's leading waste disposal companies. In a study, we were able to quickly examine for the company whether the production of hydrogen from wastewater would be feasible and economical.

Sovag's operations generate industrial wastewater that contains ammonium. It came to the company's attention that hydrogen production from wastewater using plasmalysis requires less energy than conventional electrolysis. In order to check whether such production would be attractive for the company, we conducted a study within a short period of time to examine the technical feasibility and economic viability.

We identified the available plants and their space requirements, determined the framework conditions necessary for the economic operation of the plant (e.g. wastewater volumes and ammonium concentration) and made recommendations for the implementation of a pilot project based on this.
