Federal Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland ITS

The Federal Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland is a globally unique inventory. Basler & Hofmann supports the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) in the design and revision of the geodata model and in the vectorization of the terrain map. This helps with the long-term updating of the inventory and the implementation of the protection mandate for historic transport routes.

For around twenty years, staff at the University of Bern have mapped Switzerland's historic transport routes and systematically documented their course, condition and characteristics. The Federal Inventory contains detailed information on the transport routes of national importance that are worthy of protection in maps and illustrated texts.

Since 2003, Basler & Hofmann has been commissioned by the Federal Roads Office as an external specialist service provider to manage and further develop the federal inventory. The geoinformation system (IVS-GIS) was developed in close cooperation with our specialists from the fields of geography, communication, engineering, IT, spatial and landscape planning. In addition to maps and illustrated texts, the IVS-GIS also contains the course and nature of regional and local transport routes.

The Federal Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland serves on the one hand to protect, preserve and maintain historic transport routes. On the other hand, the inventory helps to promote the use of historic routes for tourism. It thus makes an important contribution to the creation of an attractive network of footpaths, hiking trails and cycle paths.
