Balz Bauer
Managing Director, Head of Bridges an Digital Structures
Balz Bauer has been in charge of the «Bridges and Digital Structures» department at Basler & Hofmann since 2024. The civil engineer joined Basler & Hofmann in high-rise and bridge construction straight after graduating from ETH Zurich. He has held responsible roles such as subproject manager and project manager on complex construction initiatives, including the AlpTransit Gotthard project and the new central underpass at Bern station. Balz’s main areas of expertise include structures made of steel and reinforced concrete, the planning of complex bridge and infrastructure projects, and construction schedule planning. In 2020, he took over as head of the Bridges department at the Zurich office. His new department «Bridges and Digital Structures» combines structural engineering with the digital innovation lab «IDA Lab» at Basler & Hofmann. The focus is on managing structures throughout their entire life cycle and unlocking the full potential of digitalisation for clients.
The nice thing about my work is to be able to accompany a project from the first sketch on paper to the finished building. The exchange and discussion with the client, works, infrastructure operators and the contractor is varied and challenging.
The moment when, after careful and intensive planning, the first construction machines start to move and the realization of a project starts is always special. Then all the planning work becomes reality.
