Major Alpenrhein project enters next phase: Basler & Hofmann awarded contract for planning project

With the major project "Rhine - Recreation and Safety and Security", or Rhesi for short, the International Rhine Regulation has set itself the goal of significantly improving flood protection in the Rhine Valley and renaturalizing the Rhine. The project was launched eight years ago. Basler & Hofmann already led the large international planning team during the development of the general project. In mid-June, the planning team was awarded the contract to develop the planning project on the Swiss side and the submission project on the Austrian side.

The 26-kilometre section of the river between the mouth of the Ill and Lake Constance is at the greatest risk of flooding on the entire Alpine Rhine. The major Alpenrhein project aims to improve flood protection for the approximately 300,000 inhabitants of the Rhine Valley. The development of the planning project is expected to take 27 months and is extremely challenging: as this is a binational project on the border between Switzerland and Austria, it must be ensured that the different requirements and procedures of both countries are met. The aim is to start the process of obtaining the building permit in fall 2021.
