Study on the transportation of hydrogen in the natural gas pipeline network

Kurt Hasler Transport AG is a company that specializes in the transportation of fuels and combustibles and also transports hydrogen. We conducted a study for the company and the Swiss transmission system operator Swissgas to clarify whether hydrogen could be transported in the natural gas pipeline network.

The company already transports hydrogen from its production facilities in Switzerland to existing hydrogen filling stations. In the study, we were able to clarify whether transporting hydrogen in the natural gas pipeline network would be technically feasible and economically viable. To this end, we investigated the addition of hydrogen to the natural gas network in various concentrations and subsequent separation at a transshipment point.
