Lucerne through station test planning: Development of the station area 2040
The underground through station in Lucerne is a project of the century and offers the opportunity for a sustainable development of the station area. In our test planning contribution, we show how the station square can be freed up and attractive urban spaces created by reorganizing the transport system. A small-scale urban quarter with a high proportion of non-profit housing and a good mix of work and residential uses revitalizes the area and strengthens the sense of security. The new district blends harmoniously into the existing cityscape and landscape. The urban approach to urban transportation creates generous public spaces, including three large station squares and the "Corniche", an attractive connecting space along the track field with views of Pilatus and the foothills of the Alps. A continuous city bus network reduces the need to turn and wait at the main station and creates a customer-friendly, space-saving public transport system. The existing station square by the lake will be traffic-free in the short term, creating a strong connection between the station, the old town and the lakeshore. In the long term, the aim is to achieve a significant reduction in motorized traffic in the city center. Generous pedestrian and recreational areas exploit the potential of pedestrian traffic, which strengthens the functions of the center.
