Alpine Rhine flood protection

From the mouth of the Ill to Lake Constance, the Rhine runs as a border river between Austria and Switzerland. The major binational project "Rhesi - Rhine, Recreation and Safety" will improve flood protection for the communities on both sides of the border with a population of around 300,000 people. At the same time, the river is to be ecologically upgraded and its function as a recreational area improved.

The main aim of the major bi-national project is to improve flood protection for the densely populated area in the Rhine Valley between the mouth of the Ill and Lake Constance. At the same time, the ecological condition of the 26-kilometre stretch of the Rhine will be improved and its function as a recreational area strengthened - taking into account other interests such as drinking water supply and agriculture. The project is being planned using a digital project model, from which the plans are generated and in which various evaluations are carried out.

The project has extraordinary dimensions in every respect: a 26-kilometre stretch of river, two countries whose policies and legislation have to be coordinated, numerous other stakeholders such as the canton of St. Gallen, the state of Vorarlberg, the municipalities, drinking water associations and interest groups. The project period covers 26 years. Basler & Hofmann manages and leads the international planning team and can contribute its many years of experience from complex large-scale projects.
